“What inspired my piece started off as some sketches on a pad. Being that Jarritos was founded in Mexico, I wanted my illustration to reflect that authenticity. It almost felt obvious to incorporate a Luchador. I wasn’t sure who I was drawing at the time; but ironically, some of my friends said that the character kind of looked like me.”

Rockin It Suckers is a book about the RIS crew. It's the inside story of the crew that has kept graffiti alive in New York City for the past 20 years.
In the late 80s New York was a city tormented by crack and violent crime. At the same time the golden age of hip hop was in full bloom. As the authorities decided to clean up the city, a group of kids got together to taste the last of the city's painted subway trains. The ris crew was determined to keep the trains colourful and decided to wage their own war with the city. As a result they became one of the world's most important and influential graffiti crews.

Surf to Street is an all male urban art group show focusing on canvases, prints, illustration and merchandise of emerging San Diego urban artists. About the show:

The House of Elements, a new artist collective and gallery, opens its doors with Tha Illest Art Show. Tha Illest Art Show features

recent hype of the Viva La Revolucion exhibition at the Museum of
Contemporary Art San Diego, the artists in this exhibition focus on
local talent and street art legacies. How do we engage artists in our

to address the need of exhibiting local talent and community artists in
a broader context. The exhibition will include artists from Tijuana,
San Diego, New York and Los Angeles. These artists have created new
work on 9’ x 12’ canvases.
The House of Elements is a cooperative of artists and skilled
craftsmen who are dedicated to creating a unique space and artist
collective in the historic Barrio Logan district. The House of Elements
will include a dance studio, a 1,500 sq ft. gallery, a recording studio
and artists work space. The House of Elements is a multidisciplinary
art space whose mission is to create a cross collaboration of artists
and community.

This past weekend/week in San Diego was incredible. The San Diego Museum of Contemporary art hosted some of the biggest names in street art/ graffiti. Shepard Farey, Twist, Os Gemeos were spotted around town painting large murals. This was a first for San Diego. Rime, Dabs and Myla also made it down for the event. I managed to get a wall together here in North Park, San Diego. This is the outcome....

Brothers and I recently opened our second Home Mercantile retail location. For those that don't know we have had a retail store in Encinitas on the 101 for the past 8
years. We have recently opened our new location in North Park San Diego...Here is a little bit about the history of what we have been
doing...

It was at Home where ...any average person could eat,drink, and mingle with some of the biggest names in entertainment. Itwas also at Home that some of the biggest names in entertainment couldagain feel like any average person. Founded and operated byRichard Ross, Home was conceived in 1969, and opened in 1970. It wasprior to Home that set the foundation of it's success. Richard was aco-owner of a traditional English pub named The Brown Jug, that waslocated on 61st and 1st Ave. It was there, where Richard met abeautiful supervisor for TWA Airlines, and the love of his lifeCynthia. It was on first sight that Richard turned to his brotherMichael and confided, "See that girl? I'm going to marry her!" Richardand Cynthia married in 1969. It was Richards passion for music thatinspired his decision to part ways with The Brown Jug, and open Home.He felt the only place suitable for it's location was uptown on 92ndand 2nd Ave. Together, Richard and Cynthia designed the bold and uniquelogo for Home. Richard Chose the name Home for the atmosphere he wantedto create. It was also on The Beatles album Abby Road, that Richard gotthe idea for the name. Home was something that was sung a lot about onthe album.The wheels were set in motion but, it was not an instant overnightsuccess, which resulted in Home doubling as an ice cream parlor to paythe rent. It was a new formula that Richard worked on that Home startedto find it's legs. The jukebox was stocked with everything from ClydeMcPhatter, The Drifters, Lamont Dozier, to Ritchie Havens, The RollingStones, and The Beatles. There were headphones throughout the bar forpersonal music pleasure, and $5 steaks that you could cut with a fork.It was Richard's brother Jack who played a very important role in thebeginning success of Home. Jack owned a limo service, and drove a lotof the music acts that came to the city before and after their shows.Always looking for the perfect place to unwind, Jack would alwayssuggest and bring many of the acts to Home. Ritchie Havens, AliceCooper, Ten Years After, Blood Sweat and Tears, and David Bowie allgraced Home with their presence, But it was John Lennon who wouldfrequent Home often that really put Home on the map.Richard and Lennon became fast friends due largely to Richard's recentdiagnoses and battle with Hodgkin's disease. Both men shared a fear ofdeath, and created a special pact. They planned a signal that only theywould know, to signal there was life on the other side.Lennon was also seen around and photoed often in the Home tee shirt. Itwas in 1972's "Sometime In New York City", that Lennon wore the Hometee shirt in the inside cover. Lennon would also have some of his Homeshirts printed with "The Black Panther Party" fist proudly runningthrough the "O". Lennon greatly supported "The Black Panther Party". Anorganization that Richard greatly supported was A.I.M. (American IndianMovement). Home was a host to large fundraisers, supplying free foodand drinks for the cause that would generate revenue and socialawareness.Opening daily at 10a.m. till the last man standing, Home was Richard'slife. So devoted, Richard owned an apartment upstairs, and across thestreet. The apartments came in handy for much needed rest. His largeblack German Sheppard Shazam, was always at his side. Shazam was veryprotective of Richard, and always made sure all was in line at Home.Hells Angels would frequent the bar. Richard had an agreement with thelocal President of the motorcycle club that they were welcome as longas they left their colors outside. The employees and the patrons, wereimportant to Richard. They were like family!Getting to sick to work, Richard made the difficult decision to retirefrom the public's eye and sell Home. Richard sold Home in 1978. Richarddevoted his time living in Bearsville, New York outside of Woodstock.There he spent time working on, and driving his Maserati. He had agreat love and passion for exotic cars. He would also travel the globesearching a cure for Cancer, and spending time with Family and dearfriends. Sadly, Richard Ross passed away on March 20th, 1984.Today, Home is a clothing store in the northern San Diego city ofEncinitas, California. Three Nephews of Richard Ross' opened the storein 2002, using the name Home in homage to their beloved Uncle. Thestore boasts it rich history, and it's passion for music as it'screative force, and a mural of Richard as it's center piece.

When a talented Montana teenager named Max had the chance to paint alongside a member of his favorite graffiti art crew, it was difficult to tell which one was the professional artist. Max has a passion for art — particularly the work of the Stick Up Kids, a Germany-based art crew that includes graffiti artist Dave Ross, aka “Persue.”

So it was no surprise when 17-year-old Max, who is diagnosed with anaplastic large cell lymphoma, told his Make-A-Wish® volunteers that his wish was to meet and paint with one of the Stick Up Kids artists. Persue was able to represent his team in meeting Max.

“It’s always been my dream,” Max said about his artistic wish. When the day of the wish arrived, Max and Persue immediately hit it off and spent hours discussing art as they worked on the mural. The two artists had a lot in common, including a shared love for graffiti art and obvious natural talents.

The mural they created is just another step in Max’s budding art career. He already has his work displayed at a local studio. Persue’s artistic influence started small, as well — his talent was discovered while painting a wall in a skateboard shop. Since then, Persue has crafted a career that includes everything from designing name-brand shoes to painting with multiple talented art crews around the world.

The outlook is positive for Max — after seeing the artwork created during Max’s wish, a local businessman immediately commissioned Max to paint a permanent mural on the wall of a city building. This generous young artist promised to share the power of a wish® by donating a piece of his artwork to a fundraiser for his local Make-A-Wish chapter.

I was put on to this band that I have obvious slept on for the past 30 years. I thought Joy Division kicked this sound off but after hearing The Names have I been mislead?

The Names - were a Post-Punk band from Brussels (Belgium), formed in 1978 around bassist and songwriter Michel Smordynia. After local gigs as The Passengers, they changed their name in time for their debut single, Spectators of Life, released by WEA in 1979 to test the market for home-grown new wave music.

Visage - Visage are a British New Wave band. Formed in 1978, the band became closely linked to the burgeoning New Romantic fashion movement of the early 1980s.

With pressure from their record company they moved towards the new romantic sound. Some people debate whether or not Japan or Duran Duran came up with this sound. Quite Life 1979.

After searching high and low for a flick of Quasar's "SECRET" piece, (I MEAN YEARS!!!) It finally found it's way into my mailbox. Thanks to Vapor APS.

I want to share how advanced Quasar was and here is the proof. No one on the west coast in 1990 was rocking pieces like this. Quasar was often compared as the West Coast Vulcan...Look at the form of his letters this is common approach these days.

I am re-posting my Coax piece that was obviously inspired by Quasar with our signature SBA style.

12ozProphet Presents... Found Footage: 1997 Brazil Graffiti with Os Gemeos, Raven & Sonik from 12ozprophet on Vimeo.

Raven and Sonik went to São Paulo, Brazil in December of 1997 to put together a story on Brazilian graffiti for 12ozProphet's sixth issue. Twist had connected us with Os Gemeos, and we went there to introduce them to the world via our magazine. The sight of São Paulo and the otherworldly graffiti scene exploding over its gut-wrenching social landscape, the peculiarly Brazilian collision of poverty and wealth, was a complete shock. Meeting Os Gemeos - as well as Nina, Vitche, and Herbert Baglione, gave us friends for life, and the sight of their work was a glimpse into the future of an art movement we thought we knew, but even now, more than a dozen years later, has yet to catch up. Here's a short video edited from footage thought to have been lost for well over a decade.

FUZZ ONE is one of the greatest IRT legends of all time. He was one of the most prominent writers on the IRTS. FUZZ was originally from Chicago and moved to The Bronx in 1970. He started writing in the Bronx with crews like The Ebony Dukes and The Fantastic Partners. FUZZ peaked during the late 1970s. During this time period he wrote with many crews. He gained admiration for doing insides as well as burners. He hit the 2 and 5 lines with TEAN and KADE and The Magnificent Team. He bombed the 4 line with writers like BAN 2 and the Out to Bomb crew and also produced a great deal of work on the 1 and 3 lines with NOC 167. FUZZ later made his home in Queens and was equally effective on the 7 line. FUZZ ONE occasionaly painted clean trains in the 1990s.

I was sad to here that our friend and brother in the graffiti movement, Sigi von Koeding aka Dare passed away yesterday from his battle with cancer. I had the pleasure of meeting him in his home town of Basel, Switzerland in 2001. I read a post Mode made in regards to Dare and concerns with using spray paint.

"I can’t say I was a BIG fan of his style or his taste in music, but I DID hang out and paint with him in summer ‘91, then again in ‘95 in Ancona, Italy. He was a laid back and very nice guy, and for that alone he will be missed by those he was dear to.

What concerns me also here though, beyond the grief, is the illness that took him away from the culture, and the fact that this factor is not mentioned here by many of you…

We are, each and every one of us, physically different in one way or another, but we have all shared similar tools in our form of expression in this culture; namely the spray-can.

We already lost Iz The Wiz, who said at some point that he would have easily given back all that he had done for his health, but we still, many of us, carry on painting without adequate protection, and even giving our names to different colours in the palette of spray-paint cans; sadly true for our latest loss…

We each have a different reaction to whatever we choose to use or abuse in our lives, and we each have a different level of physical resistance to those substances. I started developing a sensitivity to spray paint in ‘97, after thirteen years of using it, often WITH a mask as well.

I am sorry to hear of the loss of another member of our very diverse culture, but I would also like to hear more debate regarding the long term effects that spray -paint can have on our health, and how little has been done by spray-paint manufacturers to make it any less toxic than it has been for all these years…

MAYBE Sigi’s cancer was totally unrelated to spray-paint, maybe I’m totally going off on the wrong tangent here, but I sincerely do not think that the toxins in every spray-can have no effect on weakening our general health in one way or another.
